County State Watch

District 1  Commissioner Candidate Melissa O’Brien has a wide and varied list of professional and volunteer experiences.

Neighborhoods: Melissa is the administrator of the West Cobb Advocate Facebook page, a citizen-centered blog about zoning, education, development, traffic and other issues relevant to West Cobb. She has spoken out when necessary on rezoning issues in our area: even filing County code violations to ensure a local developer followed rezoning stipulations. Melissa lives in Woodbridge at Hamilton Lake subdivision, off Kennesaw-Due West Road with her husband Matt and two children.

Small Business: Melissa was a newspaper reporter for nine years. Her regular beat was writing feature stories about small businesses. Her articles also included reports on area schools and local police. She covered four NASA shuttle launches from the Cape Canaveral press box.

Large Business: Melissa was the Communications Manager for The Business Council of New York State, Inc.  (State Chamber of Commerce). She worked with many corporate CEOs from Fortune 500 companies and wrote news releases, speeches, monthly newsletters and materials for the organization. Prior to that, she worked for the New York State Republican Assembly.

School and Athletics: Melissa served as President McClure Middle PTSA for two years, (VP for two years prior) starting “STEAMAPALOOZA” with the school’s science department. She is currently a substitute teacher at both McClure Middle and Allatoona High school. For two years, she has served as the chairperson for the Allatoona Buccaneers Baseball Team Silent Auction.

Communications Expert: Melissa worked for Chernoff/Silver Public Relations and Advertising in Columbia, SC, producing promotional campaigns for hospitals, Nickelodeon Television and Fortune 500 companies like Shell Oil. She has written speeches for local/state/national leaders including the president of Duke University. She works part time as a writing coach and grammar expert for Writing Coaches of America, Inc.
